While new to Canada, Ford’s all-new-to-us EcoSport has been available in other markets for years. So, why has it made the transatlantic jump all of a sudden? Well, Ford, like every other manufacturer, wants to have a competitor in the crossover segment, and this new itty-bitty SUV is the perfect entry for the Blue Oval. The practical EcoSport features a host of technology, as well as an attractive design and performance.

Let’s address the slightly small elephant in the room: the Ford EcoSport is ideal for those looking to downsize from a larger SUV or for those who’ve recently found themselves needing less room to cart people or things around (empty nesters), but who still want that high ride height and capability of a CUV. The 2018 Ford EcoSport offers the perfect size and drivability with its compact dimensions as a compact crossover. It really is ideal for urban life in terms of its exterior dimensions.

There are two engines available in the compact Ford EcoSport: a turbocharged 1.0L EcoBoost 3-cylinder that produces 123 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque and can only be paired with the FWD version of the compact crossover. The other engine available is a 2.0L 4-cylinder paired with the AWD models that’s good for 166 horsepower. Both engines are coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Inside the 2019 Ford EcoSport you’ll find comfortable and surprisingly roomy seating for up to five. The EcoSport also has a cool ambient lighting feature that allows you to switch between up to 7 different interior colours.

Of all the 2019 Ford EcoSport features, the coolest and most unique is most definitely the swinging tailgate. Replacing a standard lifting tailgate, the Ford EcoSport’s swings to the left. Why is this such an interesting feature? Well, it’s rather ideal for owners who are slightly shorter and struggle to bring down tailgates that lift just a little too high. And the space behind that fancy swinging tailgate is a whopping 592 litres, and with the back seats folded flat that number jumps to 1,415 litres.
