2020 Ford Escape: New Lease on Life

Coming into nearly two decades of production, the Ford Escape might seem “old” but the Blue Oval has breathed all new life into the crossover, and just when it needed it most. With a new look inside and out, as well as new powertrain options and an all-new transmission. Perhaps the most important upgrade for the all-new 202 Ford Escape is the available Hybrid models (two).
For starters, the 2020 Ford Escape received a much-needed makeover, inside and out. From the exterior, Ford designers revamped the crossover’s front end, keeping the look clean and modern as well as much less angular and perhaps a bit softer, overall.
But it’s inside that Ford really made the jump on improvement for the 2020 Ford Escape. High-quality materials replace what used to be on the previous generation Escape, and perhaps the most impressive available feature is a configurable 12.3” instrument cluster, as well as an 8” infotainment touchscreen.
Improvement comes in the form of interior space, as well. Since the 202 Ford Escape sits on an upgraded platform that lengthened and widened the overall dimensions of the vehicle, that means the interior space offers 89mm more rear seat legroom than the previous generation, along with 949 litres of cargo space with the rear seats in their normal position or 1,062L with the seats pushed all the way forward, and 1,852 litres with them folded completely flat. Opt for the Hybrid version and that space is slightly smaller at 1,722 litres.
Speaking of powertrains, the 2020 Ford Escape has a few options. All-new for this generation is a 1.5L turbocharged 3-cylinder EcoBoost engine with 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. If that engine seems a bit too small for you (albeit eco-friendly), there is a reworked version of Ford’s 2.0L EcoBoost 4-cylinder available as well, and that’s good for 250 ponies and 275 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are coupled with an all-new 8-speed automatic transmission, and power the front or all four wheels, depending on your preference.
As for the two available Hybrid models; both the Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid are equipped with the same 2.5L Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder coupled with a CVT. The regular Hybrid model is equipped with a 1.1kWh battery that produces 198 horsepower and with a single tank of gas its range sits at 880km .
The Plug-in Hybrid 2020 Ford Escape is outfitted with a larger battery (14.4kWh), and it takes 3.5 hours to fully charge it up on a 220-volt outlet. However, once you do, you’ll get 58km of fully electric range, as well as a net power of 209 horses.
